A tale of many diapers...

I decided to at least partially cloth-diaper Bella before she was born. I knew it might not work out, though, so I didn't want to set myself up too high. I gave myself permission to use 'sposies as much as I might want to, and experiment with the cloth until I figured out if I liked it, if the workload was too much to deal with, or if they even worked for us.

I really thought I would wind up deciding that it was too much hassle and sticking with 'sposies. That's what I thought.

Then I found myself a few nights ago, preparing to go to bed for the evening and putting a 'sposie on my daughter. I stood there looking at her, and that diaper just looked so uncomfortable. Papery. I thought of her snuggled up to me in bed with that paper rubbing against my belly and breasts. I thought of how hot her crotch would be by morning. I took off the 'sposie.

The problem I'm currently having is that I haven't figured out a really perfect night-time diaper solution. Boy that sounds wonderful! Actually I haven't yet figured out ANY diaper solution.

I started out, as many CD'ers do, with Kissaluv's size 0. Which were great, except that all the covers which would fit over them were so huge and bulky on her as a newborn... we just did without covers in the kissaluvs, which works except when you suddenly find yourself with a giant wet spot on your nursing pillow, which also happens to be the pillow you sleep on.

But that wasn't such a bad solution for when she was a brand newborn and her output was not so much.

Now, that would never work... a cover is an absolute must.

I have three BerryPlush AIO's by JamTots. These are *beautiful* diapers, and so soft and comfy. But they are not what I would call true AIO's, as the soaker snaps in and out of the cover. The soakers that come with are also beautiful, but so bulky that they are *still* too much for her at night. Her little legs wind up so far apart that I think she just can't be comfy. Plus, too much bulk makes sleeping on her side (nursing) difficult... she starts rolling all over the place, all off-balance.

I also have ten AIO's by BumGenius. I *love* these dipes. They are a true AIO. They go on and off exactly like a disposable diaper. Amazing! They don't take forever to dry, they are super cute, but... they have stretchy tabs which enable a great fit, but which are not covered in PUL, so they wick. So basically if you don't change baby fast enough, you are asking for a major leak issue. I noticed it is more common when she is lying on her side. She was not, however, on her side when I found myself standing in line at Chipotle over this past weekend getting damper and damper with baby in a sling. I wound up in the bathroom changing Bella on my lap while I sat on the toilet. Someone please tell me why Chipotle has no changing tables? So anyways, with BG you either need to change very frequently or use more absorbancy, which utterly destroys their trim fit and ease of use. I don't mind changing frequently during the day; she shouldn't be sitting in pee anyways! But overnight, we need something that will last about 8 hours with no issues.

I ordered some Magic-Alls on clearance. Those are just a joke, I totally understand why the company went out of business. They are ultra-trim, yes, because there is nothing to them at all! Bella peed through one in about five seconds, and I do not think she is a super soaker at all.

Right now, overnight I am using a JamTots cover with a prefold inside, and that seems to work pretty well. I could use more absorbancy, but using two prefolds adds way too much bulk. I've ordered some doublers to try so will post about that experiment when they arrive! I'm also hoping some of the doublers will extend the wear time of my awesome BumGenius dipes without adding bulk to them! And I have one wool cover I'm planning to try out tonight, with a fitted kissaluvs underneath.

To be continued...

Meanwhile, here are some photos of the diapers we've tried so far... click them to enlarge and get descriptions.

Hi Joanna, blog looks great. Colors are very bold!

Just an fyi: I used pamper sposies on #1 and plan to use either them or something else sposable at night on #2. I never noticed a heat issue. She always slept in a night outfit so the dipe was never rubbing against me. We had no problems. I know a lot of cloth diping moms who use sposies at night to help get a bit of extra sleep. A good tradeoff, imo, to not have to change a dipe so often and get more sleep.

Kathy, her latest thing is waking up at around 4am to eat and poop. Yay for the gastric-colic reflex! Poor thing gets so upset when I change her too because she really wants to stay asleep and she is like... "QUIT MESSING WITH ME, I'm TIRED!" So either way I have to change her. We're using pampers swaddlers at night, but I swear they feel humid on the outside after an hour or so, is that wierd?!? I tried Huggies too but like these better. I'm not against using 'sposies at night, just trying to find the right ones for us!
